The Great Gildersleeve is one of my favorite "old time radio" shows, and arguably the first 'modern' sit-com.
This is just a fun attempt to put a 'face' on the characters as I 'see' them in my head, while listening to the show .. it's not necessarily influenced by how the actors looked in 'real life'; although Harold Peary did look similar to how I've drawn Gildersleeve, Walter Tetley (the voice of Leroy) was a middle-aged guy with an un-naturally high voice!
I plan to doodle a couple other 'takes' on Gildersleeve characters this weekend.
doodle notes: drawn directly with ink (no pencils), but I 'cheated' a bit and added a 'fill pattern' to Gildersleeve's coat in Photoshop.
Radio with pictures? What a novel idea! This could catch on. :)
Your comment reminded me of an old-time radio archive I found a few months ago called RUSC (www.rusc.com). I browsed their list and found two episodes of The Great Gildersleeve. I'll have to check it out.
I noticed the 'cheat' and wondered if you had drawn this in Manga Studio.
So have you played with Manga Studio yet? It's got an enormous library of 'zip-a-tone' type fill patterns. If I had this program back in high school, it would have been heaven. (And I'd probably have fewer X-acto knife scars.)
